Where plumbing contractors get hurt by claims

These are the exposures carriers look at first when they price your policy.

Water damage after completion

Leaks from your work can surface weeks later. Completed operations coverage is what responds to those claims.

Your work exclusions

General liability usually pays for resulting damage, not for redoing your own faulty work. Knowing that line avoids surprises.

Excavation and trenching

Sewer and water line work adds cave-in, utility strike, and third-party damage exposure.

Service vehicles

Plumbers spend much of the day driving between calls, so commercial auto is a major exposure.

Plumbing insurance rules by state

California

C-36 plumbers can file a no-employee workers' comp exemption until January 1, 2028. After that date, nearly every license class needs a policy.

California contractor insurance

Nevada

Plumbers need a Nevada State Contractors Board license and a bond. Workers' comp is required once you have employees.

Nevada contractor insurance

Arizona

Plumbers need an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license and a bond. Workers' comp is required once you have employees.

Arizona contractor insurance

Texas

Plumbers need a state plumbing license. Workers' comp is optional for most employers, but most GCs require it from subs.

Plumbing insurance questions

Does general liability cover water damage caused by a plumber?+

Generally, general liability covers resulting damage to other property, such as a ruined floor or ceiling from a leak you caused. It usually does not pay to redo your own work. Coverage depends on your policy's wording and exclusions, so review them before a claim happens.

Do plumbers in California need workers' comp with no employees?+

Not yet. C-36 plumbers with no employees can file an exemption with the CSLB until January 1, 2028. After that date, the exemption ends for nearly every license class under SB 216.

What changed for California plumbing workers' comp in September 2026?+

For policies starting on or after September 1, 2026, the wage threshold between the high-wage and low-wage plumbing codes rose from $32 to $35 an hour.

Do I need commercial auto for my service van?+

If the van is owned by or titled to the business, or used mainly for work, you generally need commercial auto. Personal auto policies often exclude business use, which can leave a work accident uncovered.
